My gran went to Canada in 1946. She went by Cunard and disembarked in New York after a 3 week trip . they didnt make any stops on the way. She went out on the Queen Mary and came back on the Queen Elizabeth 6 months later . She went from and returned to Southampton.

Her relations met her in New York and they travelled then to Canada by train

She went to meet up with her stepdaughter and her family who she had never met before as the stepdaughter had been a British Home Child in 1909 before gran had married grandad Sadly grandad had died in 1939 so he never saw his daughter again .One of aunties daughters had come to UK in WW2 in the Canadian Nursing Corp and searched for info on the three brothers and made contact with one before she went home again, thats how the family link was re established.
Just a little of our family history :-D

Most ships have ports of call on the way prior to the final destination.......pickups and drop off passengers plus fuel and cargo......plus depends when a next ship was destine to where,,,lots of passengers went Via somewhere else or picked up a more dirct sailing from another port..

My great aunt left Wales for New Zealand via New York in 1924. She sailed to NY then crossed America - I know not how - before flying from Los Angeles to NZ. She must have liked it there - she never came back.

Usually the ships manifest will show all the passengers so if there's no children showing then would say its probably not your relation but someone with the same name,
Would doubt she would be on a USA bound ship if she was going to India.

I am convince someone will be able to throw some sensible solution to this…

I know my Grandmother and her children travelled to India around 1921, I have looked at the passage lists, I can find my grandmother but no sign of any children, the date her age the place she boarded all fit, apart from the destination the ship was bound for New York. Could it have gone to India first then on to New York?, my geography isn’t good but even I know they wouldn’t pass India on the way.
