The daughter's birth probably wasn't registered......she was illegitimate, and there were no penalties until 1875 for not registering

Hi all.

Many thanks for all your answers.

It would appear that this is one of those errors that occurs when transcribers are attempting to read old hand writing.

Also, it appears that I will have to confirm if William Cadd was a widower on the 1871 Census. If he is, then the marriage in 1872 will be correct and Ann Cadd's correct name should be Mary Ann Andrews.

Actually, the 'error' was not made by the transcriber. The image of the census return has been accurately copied.........the 'error' was by the enumerator.

William snr was indeed a widower in 1871, and you can cross-refer the details of his sons with 1881

1861 with his first wife......

I call DH the village of the damned, for a joke, but in 1861 it was full of paupers and lace makers on sweat-shop rates , children working from the age of 6

http://www.afamilystory.co.uk/history/northamptonshire-lace.aspx

Until the only red-lead factory in the country was built there, providing work, and turning the area red with pollution, there was little choice.

Hi all again

Once again many thanks.

Thanks Flick - I actually meant to type "transcriber/enumerator" but was distracted and only typed "transcriber". My apologies to the transcriber, whoever he/she is.

The 1861 census actually starts to make sense to me now, and, couple with the 1871 and 1881 census, I now appear to have the issue fixed.

Lindsey - thanks for the link.
