Hi all,
I am at the stage where I need to start searching parish records but don't really know where to start.
I live in Leeds and my dads side have mainly come from South Leeds...Wortley, Birstall, Holbeck, Beeston etc etc.
Now, I still have membership with GR until 6/10/11 and Ancestry have just emailed me with an offer of £85 for the year and told me I would have access to all west Yorkshire parish records.
I have been looking at sites today, who offer cds with certain parish records on. They have one for Leeds Parish church for a tenner... I'm sure 'some' of my ancestors would have used that church, but they could have used others too.
£85 seems a bit steep, if I could buy cds for less, especially when there are more certificates that I still need.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Debi

You could do a 14 day trial on Ancestry but you must cancel at the end or they will bill you.
You can access Ancestry for free at you local library, all you need is your library card & book a slot usually 1 hour but you may get longer if they are not busy.

I would buy the CD it will come in handy later.

Thank you, I have just done a quick search for one person, might be her.

So, the next step, do/can I send off for the cert/record for the baptism, for that person or can I view the full record elsewhere?

Thanks
Debi

Although specific look up requests are 'supposed' to be on Find Ancestors,....

........ if you copy and paste what you can see, some one can see exactly what is available. Then you can decide what to do..........if that makes sense ;-)

Baptism records (if the image isn't shown on a website) would have to be purchased from the Archive (or church) which holds the PR.

I would do what Mr. Magoo suggests and take out the 14 day trial on Ancestry.

If you find the records you want in the West Yorkshire PRs you won't need to buy the certs as you can print out the records. The marriage records would be the original cert that the couple have signed so even better than the certs you order from the GRO. You can print out any baptism records too - these usually give the names of both parents and sometimes include the date of birth as well as baptism date.

Wow!
That's fantastic!

Think I will sign up for free trial then, must go out and get some more ink first though.

Thanks all.

The data on CDs may be limited to names and dates and not have the extra information that full transcriptions and/or images provide.

Would suggest that if you can go to the local record office and search the parish registers. The marriage records are the same as the certs that you get from the GRO but will only be the cost of a photocopy. These are what you sign when you get married (if you're married). And they show your rellies handwriting.
