If you like to give his name and what you know about him, people will help here by looking for him in census, where his birthplace should be stated.
His marriage certificate should give his father's name and occupation, but won't mention birthplace.

if i got my ggrandfathers marriage cert, would this have his parents name on the cert and where born his marriage was in nottinghampshire in c1855

It looks as if you need to contact Gloucester Archives to see if they have the information you want.

You have to get a readers ticket for Kew but it can be done on the day

For pre-1837 births, marriages and deaths you will need to search parish records and these are usually to be found in county archives, not TNA.

Which area of the country are you interested in?

I have not been to the National Archives myself but I think you would just have to pay for photocopying costs for documents.

However you will not be able to get birth certificates from 1827 as registration didn't start until 1837. You would have to look for baptisms in the area where the birth took place. These won't give as much information as birth certificates although should name the parents but not necessarily give the mother's maiden name.

has anyone been to tna, i would like to visit there and get documents on old birth/marriage/workhouse cert etc, would anyone have info on cost of documents etc and would any parents names be on birth certs aound 1827, any info much appreciated
