and re the Chester link

"The chain stores of Liptons, Home & Colonial, Maypole, and Pegrams established branches in Chester, and their branded, packaged goods started to supplant the shop-blended and shoppacked provisions typical of the older and often more exclusive retailers."

And if you put Pegrams into the 'search' on the National Archives site

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

There are 248 results, not all relating to the business but some certainly are.

Also A2A (Access to Archives)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/

I would also suggest trying both 'Pegram' and 'Pegrams' in both search engines and just wading through the results to see what is relevant.

And the NA in-depth research guide to Companies and Businesses

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/companies-and-businesses.htm

And a couple of podcasts to listen to that you may find interesting,
-Finding company records
-Shop workers: tracing your retail ancestors

Podcasts http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/podcasts/

Please remember that the lectures may be a little out of date with regard to 'finding aids' so check the research guides on the NA site for the latest information and don’t forget to ‘Google’!

There's someone with the surname Pegram on this site, don't know if they are any distant connection to what you're looking for, also Pegrams on Ancestry. :-)

-Don`t know if this is connected, but down here on the south coast of england we used to have Pegrums the Bakers... { pretty sure thats how it was spelt}

They had shops locally and used to do home deliveries in the 60`s and 70`s....

I was just in a different discussion group here in the UK & Pegrams Stores cropped up, so I Googled it & found your discussion. There was such a store on Stretford Road, Urmston Manchester in the 1950s, when I lived near there.

I can remember Pegrams grocery stores in Liverpool in the 50's and possibly into the 60's. After that they disappeared altogether - not sure if they just closed down or were absorbed by someone else.
