Ty George

Hi Annie Laurie, ty someone told me it was turned into a Military prison in 1850's and Im assuming he was with the Staffs the only thing we know for certain he was a Private when his daughter was born at Greenlaw. The story of him fighting in the Crimean is one that has come down through the family. I havent got ancestry but will see if I can find someone to check. Thank you for your help

Wasn't it an Army barracks? So he might just have been stationed there with the Army. Do you know which regiment he was in?

Would be worth checking the Medal records on Ancestry to see if he got the Crimean Medal

Ive looked at the records on FMP, sorry but cant find anything that connects to your man.

Perhaps someone else can have a look or advise where other records might be

Could he have been a part of the prison staff, and not a prisoner, unless you know different of course, therefore, if not a prisoner he would have staff quarters for his family.

does anyone have any information regarding Greenlaw Miltary Base/Prison ie why would anyone be there having a child in there in
1858? My 3 x great Grandfather was a solider at the time of his daughters birth and we think he may have been at the Crimean war from 1854-56. What type of crime would he have to commited to eand up here with a wife and child and soon to be new baby? Any information will be much appreciated thank you in advance.
