I made contact with someone on this site offering them a photograph of their 6x grandfather taken c.1870's

They did not take me up on the offer.

Can't understand it ... I would have jumped at the chance !

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 2 Jul 2011 21:22

I have a photo of my grandparents cottage, which is now demolished.
I knew that the village pub in that village in Wales diplayed a few shots of the village, but not what I needed, so I phoned the landlord, explained that the cottage had been just yards from the pub and asked if he would display a postcard asking if any villagers had a photo of the cottage.

I duly sent off the card and within a few days was contacted and now have 2 great views of the cottage.

This idea could perhaps work for people's photos too. You never know what people have tucked away unless you ask.

Thanks, i'll look into that
I already have a fasir few newspaper articles about him, and incidents in which he was involved in, including prizefighting on multiple occassions, rioting and many other things
I would love to put a photo to this name, i know its a longshot as he lived from 1844-1892, but i hope his position as town crier may help me get a photo or his criminal record
It also appears that his father was a criminal aswell, having been aressted a fair few times himself, his father also went by the same name, Timothy Hill

Joel

"For example i had an ancestor who was town crier in wolverhampton, staffordshire for over 20 years and he was also a reknowed criminal having well over 40 convictions in his life"
- I would contact the local records office about him, the local newspapers, and write a letter to be published in the local newspaper; also, I would post about him in rootsweb mailing lists and in other family history sites, too.

Thank you, i've tried that aswell :)
What about if you had ancestors who could of been photographed publicly? For example i had an ancestor who was town crier in wolverhampton, staffordshire for over 20 years and he was also a reknowed criminal having well over 40 convictions in his life
Any chance of dining photos in newspaper etc of people like that?

Hi Joel,

If your really lucky, Ancestry has US Passport Applications and some have photos.

I haven't been as lucky to find any for my ancestors but have found some for others.

Hello There,
Just posting this as a general chat, what ways would you go around in finding photos and what not of your ancestors?
I know obviously about speaking to older living relatives, but i was wondering of any other methods about which you have gained photos?
As having photos give us obviously a much stronger link to our ancestors!

Regards,
Joel Fraser
