Yes Marilyn...
The birth father is the link to my ancestors.... my great grandfather's brother, so it was great to have my suspicions confirmed.

I had spent ages trying to search for the child as the probable illegitimate daughter of the man's later wife.
Just shows we can't jump to conclusions.

The bonus there is at least you knew her birth father ....in order to chase up her ancestors......

Interesting information.


I have a copy of a birth certificate which doesn't quite fit all those catagories... It is for a birth in early 1882.
The parents weren't married, so the birth was correctly registered in the mother's name with father's name column left blank.
I think the mother may have died in childbirth ( there is a death registration which fits well ) and the child was registered by her father and the informant column names him as such, even though his details are not in the Father's column.

That was indeed bonus information, which I hadn't expected to be confirmed, although it was the expected answer.
The daughter was shown with his surname in 1891 when she lived with his family and again with his surname when she lived away as a maid with a family in 1901.
She married in her birth name though...... father shown as unknown.

What a mix-up. !
