Storing a Family Tree on an Apple I Pad Tablet

Hi everyone,

at the moment I store my family information using Family Tree Maker on my Windows computer.

We have just bought an Apple Mac tablet today and would like to put this information on this so when I go the records office I will have it at my finger tips.

I appreciate I may have to buy a new application but of course don't want to re-enter all the information.

Has anyone stored their family tree on a Mac Tablet and if so how does it differ to an ordinarly GEDCOM file.

Thanks

Lesley

Surely a GEDCOM is a GEDCOM?

As long as you have an FTM Apple compatible programme to open it, I'd have thought the layout would be the same.

As Apple Mac tablets are relatively new, lucky you to have the option ;-) Hopefully a fellow user will spot this and give their personal experience.

Ancestry have an app which allows you to store your tree although I've not tried emailing GEDCOM from FTM to myself and opening it on my iPad.

Hello Lesley :)

I don't have an ipad but have a mac. Just to let you know that there are many genealogical programs available for the Mac. I used to use FTM for my pc and held out until they released a version for the Mac which came out last year. (a long wait!)

However, I don't know how it compares to your PC version (I think the Mac version they released was based on the previous pc version rather than the latest version)

Gedcom files will transfer over but I think you'll need one of the later pc versions to transfer FTM files over to the mac version. My FTM records wouldn't transfer over as my FTM pc version was too old. However, it carried over the gedcom records ok.

(You may need to look into whether the ipad supports this program or not as I'm not an expect about ipads and their programs)

As TootyFruity says Ancestry has a free application by the way which stores your tree online.

Good luck :)

Hi Lesley,
I also have a ipad and use it for family history.
As you have a windows computer download the free version of Legacy 7 to the computer import your gedcom into it. Also download Families to the computer
On the ipad download the app Families I think this is about £8 available through itunes/app store.
You need to sync the Families on ipad and Families on the computer either using wifi or sync cable. All info then displayed on ipad.

You cannot import a gedcom as such.

If you had a mac computer I recommend Reunion which you would need to buy for both ipad and mac computer ( two separate Purchases)

I use both Legacy/Families and also Reunion. as I have an both mac and windows computers.

Both work on iphone as well although Legacy is sluggish on there.

Hope you are enjoying your ipad as much as I am.
Sue
