Can anyone tell me if there is a place called Enfick in or near Blackburn please?

I found this record on LOPC, but I can't find Enfick on any map.
I wondered if it should be Intack, which I have seen marked on a map of Blackburn?
Or could it be an old district which no longer exists?

Baptisms: 18 Apr 1810 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Archibald Whittaker - Son of John Whittaker & Ellen
Born: 25 Mar 1810
Abode: Enfick
Register: Baptisms 1792 - 1812, Page 329, Entry 20
Source: LDS Film 1278804

Some kind members have already helped me to find this person on the census, so please don't go to any trouble looking him up again. I don't want anyone to waste precious time and resources, but if anyone can help with this one last bit of the jigsaw, I will be extremely grateful.

Thanks
Sonya

You could try posting on the Lancsgen list
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/LANCSGEN.html

I think your best bet re Enfick=Instack is to view the image of - either at Lancs RO in Preston or at an LDS FHC - you've got the film # for the latter.

I have had a look back through the registry @ St Mary the Virgin Blackburn and no one else has Enfick as an abode.

www.lan-opc.org.uk/Blackburn/Blackburn.../baptisms_1810.html

If you google Blackburn Lancashire Parish Registers they may have a contact. There is a stack of registers there.

Cheers Persie

Thanks for the advice, folks. :-)

I had also looked through the St Mary the Virgin baptisms and I didn't find anyone else born at Enfick, either. I think it must be a mis-transcription but I thought I'd ask, just in case anyone here is an expert in Blackburn's history.

were any of the rest of the family described as living in Clayton le Dale?

There is a Brick House shown on the map in that area

for info the Lancashire Records Office is now closed to the public until October, but they will try to answer email queries

could it be Intack? An area between Blackburn and Atrington

Sonya Report 6 Jul 2011 22:34

Joan and Helen, thanks for your input. As I said in my original post, I wondered myself if it could be Intack.

I didn't know Enfield existed - that's where local knowledge comes in handy.

Enfick / Enfield. I can see the potential there for mistranscription. The first four letters are the same, and eld could easily be mistaken for ck.

The only reference to Enfield I can find on the map is Enfield Wharf near Clayton-le-Moors. That's not a great distance from Clayton le Dale, where the previous two children were born.

Enfield certainly seems a strong contender! :-)

I looked at the map and thought Enfield and sat looking at my keyboard trying to work out how... but you are right... some of the transcriptions are way out...

I used to act as the registrar for births in a suburb here in NZ and some people's writing was hard to read. Peoples Names were the worst as you could look up street names, places etc... Then I did the deaths for the local funeral director and one had to be armed with a medical dictionary.. some doctors are a nightmare to read.... and we didn't have google then.

I wonder if it could be the name of a farm or hall? Some of my rellies used that as a description of abode. I'll have a look at the OS map.

although the Lancs records office is closed to the public they are still answering email queries where possible

As you know the exact date and place of the baptism it may be worth asking them to check the original entry

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the delay in acknowledging your replies but I couldn't get on the site yesterday despite several attempts. Please don't think I was ignoring you!

I have emailed the Lancashire Records Office, so I'll update this thread when I get a reply. No doubt they are very busy at the moment, so I imagine I'll have to wait a while.

I had a reply today from the Lancashire Records Office, which surprised me because I thought it would take much longer tor them to respond.

They have looked at the original entry and confirmed that the Abode has been mistranscribed and should be Enfield, not Enfick.

I am assuming that this is Enfield at Clayton le Moors/Accrington - unless anyone knows of another Enfield in the Blackburn area?
