Hi Astra,

I have just looked at the location you have given, it does not look like it.

I have just been onto our local Archives Dept. They cannot help either.

Thanks for posting.

Regards
Alan

Alan

and Maureen

sometimes the name given, either on old parish registers OR on censuses are of the farm or hamlet where someone was born.

So Alderfit could be the farm, the estate, or the collection of houses .......... which no longer exists and possibly will not be found even on an old map.

Found this by google, but the info on the web page does not give any more info about Alderfit, not much use really.

On the image it looks like Alderpit when magnified to 300%.
Compare the P on coal pit for her sons to the p in Alderpit..

It could be the name of a coal pit in Hoyland/Greasborogh.

Also looked for Rotherham Registratin Districts. the name doesn't appear on the list but interesting.

Yikes! Don't look at me!!!!

I think until alan2938 comes back with a name it's sort of futile.

Best,
Maureen
PS-It's getting around that hot time of year here when thinking takes a back seat to sitting still doing nothing.

Just on the southern side of Hoyland there is an area called

Alderthwaite

this to me looks likely when you take the strong accent from that part of yorkshire into account, you would need to look at a O/S map of at least 1;10000 but better on a 1;25000

Thank you all for your replies.

From the information you have given about Hoyland, Greasboro & Rotherham etc. It seems to fit.

They are all in a short distance from Wentworth.

Pokie Pie, looks as though you are spot on !

Thanks
Alan
