Surnames vary tremendously and have been written as they sound at times :)

For Irish variations, for example, McCusker can be McCusker, MacCusker, M'Cusker, Mcusker, Cosker, Cusker, and varying other transcriptions if the accent has been misunderstood, and McAlarney can be McAlarney, Mclarney ,,,, :-)

Very normal to have various spellings ( and not just in Ireland lol).

It's just down to remembering to look at all variants of a name when searching I'm afraid.

Hi is it normal to have various spellings of names in Ireland? I have been tracing my grandmother (on my mums wedding certiifcate her name is spelt "hutchison")
On My grandmothers wedding certiifcate it is spelt "Hutcheson"
and on a census which I believe includes my granmother it is Hutchinson!

How on earth do I trace my family with all these variations?
