Just got back from work and I have looked at the original passenger list and am certain that the name is "Scrimgeour"
Thank you again Astra much appreciated, I have looked myself in the past but obviously wasn't thinking laterally

Thank you Astra and Chrissiex.
What an interesting spelling of a good old Scottish name.
You have the right family Astra all the siblings match. It would appear that he went out to make his fortune and got caught up in the war.
David is my grandfather and because he was born in S.A. and died in Calcutta I do not have a definite birth date or death, the only record of his death is the burial in Scottish Cemetery in Calcutta.
I have tried those websites Chrissiex but haven't got very far, probably because most of the Transvaal records were lost for that period.
I am amazed that you found the passenger list with a spelling like that Astra.

Up to now I have been unable to pinpoint them coming back unless they all travelled separately which seems unlikely.
Maybe someone else will be able to find them.

You might find this site interesting

http://www.scrimgeourclan.org.uk/

and the webmaster there might be able to help ?

also if you search for the surname in South Africa national archives there are many reference ( I did not see any on a quick scan that seemed early enough )

http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm

click on

Search National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System

then click on

All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records

for example

sister Martha in the 1901 census was born abt 1891 in Dundee so they must have been in SA only for a fairly short time ?

I don't see them in passenger lists from 1890 at findmypast but if you think how the name might be misspelled that may not be surprising :-)

there is one person by that surname in the Imperial Yeomanry ( ie in the Anglo-Boer war around 1900 )

Scrimgeour, John 37117, Trooper 1st Scottish Horse

http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iys.htm

the wars were in 1880-81 ( first ) and 1899-1902 ( second ) so I would think maybe they were there for other reasons

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Boer_War

edit

cross posted :-)

well done Astra !

probably they left when war broke out ?

Sorry. His name is David Rennie Malcolm Scrimgeour, his parents were Alexander (stonemason) and Jessie (nee Malcolm). The family are shown on the 1891,1901 and 1911 census in Lochee. i have no idea why or when they went or returned. I know that the Transvaal was Boer territory and it was the time of the war with the British.
Thank you all for your comments to date

I was waiting for a cake to finish cooking so thought i would look and see who was born in SA in 1894.
Strong possibility that it isn't the right one as his mother was South African and the OP states british parents.

PS. The cake sank!

antiquesam how could anyone help without some names and other relevant information ??

a hypothetical quesion does not usually produce answers ... unless maybe there were a central index of births in the Transvaal in the 19th century that someone could direct you to ... but there was not

I do not subscribe for the 1911 census but I did a free search for any surname with an E in it for a person born in 1894 in Transvaal and got a few dozen results ... Astra do you have a magic wand, lol ?

I have a relative shown in the 1911 census as born in the Transvaal in 1894 to British parents, any help in getting more information would be appreciated
