Hi,

Today I have been and copied the wording off a gravestone and wondered if anyone could help me with the meaning. I have tried to google it but can't see it.

The wording is Rose Mary Phillipson E. de. M who died June 7th 1897 aged 34 years. It is the E de M that I am not sure of.

Thanks.

Sally

Was she Roman Catholic? E de M usually means Enfant de Marie signifying that she was educated at a convent i.e. educated to be a lady.

Thanks for your help she was not of Irish decent but reading through the other links I think she may have been a missionary.

What confused me at first was that the gravestone is in an Anglican church and it seems to be a Catholic meaning but from reading further I see that Catholics were buried in Anglican Churchyards which would explain why sometimes the family appear to be Catholic and sometimes Anglican.

Also one of her great nieces was a nun in a Catholic convent and they worked at different times for local well known Catholic families including The Duke of Norfolk at Arundel Castle.
