A huge "thank you" to everyone who has helped me find Matilda.
She was there all the time but we had to shift a few cobwebs!
Thanks especially to Kathleen who came up with so much information, so rapidly that I had to beg time out to collate it.
R.I.P. Matilda.

Just to leteveryone know I still haven't been able to get to Birmingham Library to look up info for Fiona.

If anyone else is able to help her it would be great.

Fiona has now got the marriage cert of matilda Slater to Joseph Burns.
it IS the right Matilda!

I'm still not well enough to do any research for her.
6th Floor is now only open Weds-Fri inclusive.

Hi Everyone, I had said that I would be going to Birmingham Library today to try to get info about Matilda Slater for Fiona.

Unfortunately, I was not able to do so.

FROM THIS WEEK THE TOP FLOOR WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

There is a marriage on Freebmd of a Matilda Slater. to Joseph Burns.

Checking on familysearch.org we find that the marriage was in All Saints Church.
Just in case anyone else is able to take up the baton.

I will try again when I am better.

Tess

EDIT marriage was 4th quarter of 1839 in Birmingham

Fiona.
Just a thought.
Have you looked on the census for Mathilda under her maiden name.
She was the eldest child & may have stayed single to look after the younger siblings if her mother´s health wasn´t too good.
You will be very lucky to find exact dates of birth as far back as that. All the baprisms for the children of the 1st marriage are on Familysearch. If you can´t find them, give me a shout because I have a note of them. There were 6 altogether including Matilda, but can´t see any marriages.
Hopefully, Tess will come up trumps next week

Tess.
If they´re not on the open shelves on the 6th floor, they are up in the archives.
Sorry, can´t remember which. It´s been a long time.
I agree. Much prefer looking through books. Those microfiche machines drive me mad. Never mind a new library, lets have some modern machines.

Thanks Marion, not sure if St Martins records are in a book on the shelves, or on micro fiche (or whatever its called). Not very good with the special reading machines, but if I have time I will give it a go.

Hi Tess.
According to familysearch the children of John & Mary 1 were baptised at St Martin. Might save you time if you look there first.
Just a thought.

Hope to go to Birmingham Library on Monday. I will try to look up Marriages in St Phillips Church, to see if I can find one for Matilda.

They do have some parish records in the Library. I think that they have records for St Phillips, but don't know what dates they cover.

Library will be closing soon, to get ready for moving things over to new building. So there may be limited info. and limited time to find it.
But will do my best.

Tess
EDIT Will also look for St Martins and St Peter and Paul (Aston juxta Birmingham)

Fiona, willing to give it a go but not quite sure where to start. Records - as far as I know - are kept for individual churches, so unless we have a church to go on it might be too tricky. Happy to ask though.

In the meantime, is there an LDS (Mormon) family history centre near you? Check here:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

It is possible to get them to obtain a microfilm (or whatever they use!) of parish records for you to view - for a small charge I believe. The Mormon Church runs the Familysearch site if you didn't know.

Thank you both--I`ve never used family search I`ll give it a whirl.
I had the surname "Edwards" as a possible for John`s wife and it had occurred to me that there was a big age difference between Matilda and Theodosia.
A second marriage would be the convenient answer---John would be on his second lot of children in his mid-thirties.
So it seems from your research Marion that the girls were step sisters, not aunt and neice.
I`d still be very grateful for a look up when/if you have time in the records office Jan for birth and or marriage for Matilda.
many, many thank yous for all the trouble you`ve gone to . Fiona

Just an add on. The system won´t let me edit.
Looks like John Slater may have married twice, both times to a Mary.
John Slater m Mary Ryder 21.1.1800 St Phillip. She was mother of Matilda.
She probably died & he re married 7.10.1813 to Mary Edwards who was the mother of your Theodosia. Baptisms of all the children from both marriages are on Familysearch.

Hi Fiona.
On Familysearch there is a Matilda Slater bapt 23.11.1801 St Martin d/0 John Slater & Mary. She had a brother John b 1811.
This would seem more likely if the sampler is dated 1813.
Are you perhaps looking at a generation too soon & Matilda was actually Theodosia´s aunt rather than her sister?
Good luck.

brummiejan Report 13 Jul 2011 22:34

Just a comment - if the sampler is dated 1813 she would be a bit old to be Theodosia's sister wouldn't you say? Unless I am getting the wrpng end of the stick!
Lucky you to have this heirloom.

Fiona Report 13 Jul 2011 20:07

Hello Jan, I`ve been puzzling over this for 30+ years so obviously no hurry!
I`m trying to find Matilda Slater. The Slater family details I have are-
John Slater b. c. 1786
Mary Slater b. c. 1781
Then I think Matilda
Henrietta b .c. 1821
Theodosia b. c. 1821 (my g.g. grandmother)
David b. c. 1826
In 1841 the family were living in Francis St. , Aston, Duddeston and Nechells.
The reason I want to find Matilda is because I have a sampler worked by her, dated Feb 22nd. 1813 and that is what started off my interest in the family history. I`m sure that she must have been a sister of my g.g. grandmother otherwise I can`t imagine why this sampler has been kept all this time--goodness nearly 200yrs!
I have to assume that she was married by 1841 and have found some possible matches but they don`t help with establishing her birth etc.
Theodosia has been relatively easy to trace (God bless her parents for giving her an unusual name ) but not so Matilda.
I would be so grateful if you can help---all the other work I`ve done seems incomplete without the one who started it off.
thank you Fiona
