Whilst researching my family tree I have uncovered details of a child buried in our family grave, but have no idea why.
She was born 1936 and died age 23 months in 1938.
Her name was veronica Cosgrove and the address on the obituary shows an address of 43 Highfield lane Keighley.
Her birth record shows mothers surname Gill.
The only marriage record matching these surnames was in 1926 between Frank Cosgrove and Emma Gill.
Does anyone have these people in their tree ? :-)

When you say family grave, did the family have a exclusive rights of burial on the plot, is there a memorial and is Veronica mentioned on the memorial?

Unless exclusive rights are purchased then other people can be buried in the same grave and there is not usually a memorial

Hi, I have now established that the father was Frank Gill and the mother Lily, from Leeds, despite the fact that William and Emma Cosgrove wereliving at the address registered in the child's obituary, so i am trying to find the link between these 2 sets of people.

Also, The grave has no Headstone, but according to Utley Cemetery records, the Grave for 4 people was bought by William Priestley in 1892 when his son died, their son was the first to be buried, then William in 19198 and than his wife in 1920. I presume that because he bought a grave for 4 people that would give him exclusive rights I do not know for sure.

Thankyou for your advice all

regards
Joan :-)

Joan,

Just want to get things straight:

You said: "The only marriage record matching these surnames was in 1926 between Frank Cosgrove and Emma Gill."

I think you mean Frank Cosgrove and Lily Gill.

Then you said: "I have now established that the father was Frank Gill and the mother Lily"

Do you mean the parents were Frank Cogrove and Lily Gill?

I'm guessing that Frank and William and Lily and Emma were siblings.

Have you looked to find them together in 1911?

don't know about England, but here in Ireland, its not unknown for someone having a relative bury a child in their burial plot...especially if it was a big family plot.

Hi,

I appear to have caused confusion, so if I can clarify.
The obituary record shows Veronica Cosgrove age 23 months living at 43 Highfield Lane Keighley, died Victoria hospital Keighley, buried 03 Feb 1938.
The Voters Poll record shows William and Emma Cosgrove at that address at the time.
I located a marriage for these 2 in Barnsley 1912 and that was all I could find.
Subsequently someone else found Frank Cosgrove and lily Gill who married in 1926 in Bramley Leeds and it is now believed that although they were not on the voters list for the time, they may well be the parents
This assumption is based on their ages, as William and Emma may have been too old to have a child.
It may be that Veronica was living with relatives rather than her parents at the time, and so I am trying to establish a link with Frank Cosgrove and William Cosgrove , and also the link between Emma Gill and Lily Gill, as this would explain why she was in Keighley.

I then need to establish what connection there was with my family - the Priestley's.

I appreciate this is very complex, hence my plea for help.
KInd regards
Joan
:-)

This looks like the marriage of William and Emma below and the couple pre marriage in 1911, but it may not help. Veronica could well be their child as Emma would only have been 40 when she was born and there is a line of earlier children of the couple born in Barnsley which fit in well with Veronica's later birth.
