Yes that is correct - sadly we had one in the family 30 years ago.

What happens is that the inquest is opened and if the coroner is satified with the results of the post mortem and the physical cause of death he issues a certificate to allow the burial to take place. The inquest is then ajourned until a later date in order for statements to be taken from the various witnesses who will later be attending the full hearing.

The death is not registered nor the death certificate issued until after the verdict and it is normal to see the coroner shown as the informant.

The death cert would not have been issued until after the Coroner's verdict had been handed down.

Would the death certificate tell you that? Wouldn't a coroner have to decide that later.

It would be worth getting the death certificate to see if he did commit suicide. If he did then that is probably why he wasn't buried in Church of England consecrated ground.

I think from what my aunt said he is buried round the back of the church out of the way,

PP - re: "he would have grown up in an era when being non C of E would have been frowned upon."

I can't go along with that. If I look at the places registered for marr in England (excl Monmouth) in 1920, there's 29751 of which 49.6% are C of E. Course, this doesn't say anything about attendance, but it's enough for me to doubt your statement.
