Can anyone help me with this please
I've just received a birth certificate where the mother's maiden name is,

Susan Little late Foot formerly Collins

Does this mean she started as Collins then married a Foot or Started Foot and married a Collins?

What a strange way to word it. Can a birth registration office help you with this?

I could have a guess but it could be wrong... it needs to come form an officialy source unless someone else has already done the research on the matter.

Could this be her second marriage and Collins be her original maiden name?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1926 (>99%)
Foot Susan Little W Ham 4a 423
Little Leonard J Foot W. Ham 4a 423

I would think it meens she is married to mr Little and her previous marriage was to the ( late ) mr Foot so her maiden name was ( formerly ) Collins

someone will correct me if i am wrong

Would this be the marriage to Little
Marriages Dec 1930
Collins Susan Little Newcastle T. 10b 144
Little William Collins Newcastle T. 10b 144

If so then
Born Foot
1st Collins
2nd Little
though could only find this marriage with those surnames on FreeBDM.

It probably is her second marriage but I haven't been able to find a Susan Foot marrying a Collins or a Susan Collins marrying a Foot!
There is a Susan Collins born in 1899 in West Ham. I may have to send for the wedding certificate to be sure.

I find it easier to think of Late...as lately, ie. just prior to the present surname.

We have several certificates for various people in Sussex and one particular Registrar always refers to the woman's previous name as 'Late' regardless of whether she was married before the present marriage.

Gwyn's right - the late Foot doesn't indicate whether Mr Foot is dead or not (although he probably was dead). Note that even after he died, she'ld still be Mrs Foot - she might have even stayed Mrs Foot after a divorce, especially if she had kids.

Gwyn's way of thinking about it makes sense. It's just because I couldn't find the marriage on FreeBMD that I loked at other ideas. Now I looked at the transcription records and they haven't finished 1920 marriages yet. I did find the image now I know the date.
