I've just noticed the images for the unindexed 1831 Quebec census are online via:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA

They're listed under Canada, Lower

Lachute, e.g., abt 70km WNW of Montreal was in the County of Argenteuil.
In 1851, it was in the electoral district of Deux Montagnes.

A search of Quebec 1861 via:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA
gets several hits incl

Name:James Heathe
Gender:Male
Census Place:Chatham, Argenteuil, Quebec
Age:24
Estimated Birth Year:1837
Birthplace:L.c.
Marital Status:Single
Religion:Baptist
Page Number:9
Line Number:27
Film Number:517352
LAC Film Number:C-1260-1261
Digital Folder Number:4108656
Image Number:78

The impt thing is he's in Chatham Twp in 1861, so that's where he probably is in 1851.
This is unfortunate as, before the formation of the County of Argenteuil, Chatham was in the electoral district of Deux Montagnes.
3 of 17 subdistrict census returns for Deux Montagnes are missing (incl Chatham Twp).

Go to the AG site:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html
and take the 1852CA link at top right, then drill down by location and you'll see the Chatham status.
(NB the 1851 census was delayed, so the nominal date of 12/1/1852 was finally used)

Earlier 19th cent censuses for this area only named the head of household and the family composition.
These are available on LAC microfilm:

Chatham - DEUX-MONTAGNES (COUNTY) QUE
1831 C-723
1842 C-728

A place search in the LDS FHL library catalog for Quebec (and click on the film notes button at top right on the old site) gets:

There is an 1852 census here but I can't find a Heatlie. There are some Heatleys in Ontario but they don't look like yours.

Hi Margee
I am looking for James Heatlie who was married to Agnes Heatlie surname Sanderson. They were both from Scotland but not sure of the area. They lived in Argenteuil Canada in 1861 with 7 of their children, they can be found in the same place in the 71, 81, and 91 census as well. They married in 1826 in Edinburgh Scotland , they had 3 children born in Scotland with their first in Canada born in 1832 so they must of gone over there between 1826 and 1832ish. Anything you can find would help greatly.
Thanks in advance xx

Do you care to post the name and where in Canada they lived? Some of us in Canada might have access to local records.

Have a read of this explanation about Canadian census

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1851/001005-140-e.html?PHPSESSID=5ft5q4nvrqc1dslkfk9coa6hc2

It looks as if they tried to take a national one in 1842 unsuccessfully. The 1851 was more successful, but unfortunately a lot of the records did not survive.

If you think you know where your relatives were living, its always worth doing a general internet search for their province or names.

Try http://www.cyndislist.com/canada/ as a portal to various Canadian records.

Hi all,
Does anyone now if there was a census taken in Canada in 1841 or 1851? I am looking for a family who emigrated from Scotland in the 1830s and finding them is proving very difficult. I have them in 1861 in Canada but that is a big gap from when they actually went over there in the 30s.? Will be back on the board shortly.
