Margaret/Mary?

Thank you both for your replies, I think you are right Margee....I have never heard of Margaret shortened to Mary either but thought I would ask just in case.

I have a couple of women who were "Mary Ann" on BMD certs in my tree that are down as "Margaret" in census records (especially on Scottish census)

Could it have been shortened to Marg't and someone read it as Mary?
I've never heard of Margaret shortened to Mary. Shortened to Peggy occasionally.

Does anyone know if people shortened the name Margaret to Mary?

I have an ancestor that that comes up with the name Margaret in census records, but when searching the parish records there have been 2 occasions when it comes up that her name is Mary.
