Welcome back Christine.

After a traumatic few years, immersing yourself in a hobby can be a wonderful relaxation. Hopefully you will get back into the flow fairly quickly.

If you've put up any requests for help in the past, you will find the threads under the 'my threads' button under 'Tools' to the left of the page.

i am hoping anyone can help me out my gggrandfather was John Devanny the name he migrated to south australia under the name Devanny in 1850 then in 1852 he married a Mary Fitzgerald in the Roman Catholic Church on West Terrace Adelaide [he was a general labourer] shortly thereafter he changed the family name to McAvaney for what reason i donot know but he was born in County Clare Ireland in 1804 parents could not read or write he was born in a workhouse soon after his birth his father vanished and we all know what happened to the Irish Records of that time family story is that his mother just used an X on registry papers what i have found out so far is [this is where i would like assistance] is somebody else substantiate what i found that they both came to Australia on board the ship named "Elgin" also that Mary was born in County Clare Ireland but i dont know the year exactly except that i have been told she was 23 years old when she married John McAvaney if anyone can i would like this all substantiated from what i feel i found he died 1875 in Adelaide and i believe Mary died approx 1906 the other big favor is can anyone do a general search on the name McAvaney and its variants also the name Devanny as i would like to somehow find more of the family if possible thanking you so much Christine Read [nee McAvaney] p.s. i am a direct descendant of the above he started the family line out here in Australia

Had to have another break to refresh my brain from doing so much genealogy and also being a carer for my husband 24/7 it does wear you out physically and mentally hard to get proper respite these days

Chrissie
You have certainly had a difficult time, so although I can't offer direct help, may I suggest that you add Australia...to your heading, by editing your 1st post, so that you attract the attention of people who may be able to find something for you.

Hi
The Elgin sailed for Port Adelaide in 1849. It was a ship carrying mostly orphaned Irish girls. There were 3 Mary Fitzgeralds, aged 15, 16 and 17 on board.
Only half a dozen or so men on board and none of them a Devaney or McAvaney.

Maybe he went to Australia on a slightly later boat.
