You might like to have a listen to the National Archives Podcasts on the subject....

Podcasts http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/podcasts/

- From crime to punishment: criminal records of our ancestors from the 18th and 19th centuries
- Catching Victorian and Edwardian criminals on paper
- Criminal ancestors: trial records at The National Archives

Please remember that the lectures may be a little out of date with regard to 'finding aids' so check the research guide on the NA site for the latest information.

If you're a member of your local library you can access their website & use you library card to view the local newspapers for the 1800's.

Hi,
i have an Ancestor by the name of 'Timothy Hill' who by the mid 1880's had over 40 criminal convictions, he was also a baliff and town crier for Wolverhampton, staffordshire. Varying from prizefighting, theft, assault, rioting, criminal damage and all sorts!
whilst i have some newspaper records on him, i'm sure there are more, anyone recommend any websites or can help me?
also, would he have a criminal record?
i have used ancestry and found him on the criminal register, for his trials, but are there any other information i can find out about him?
Was having that many criminal conviction common at that time (1860's to 1890's)
Regards,
Joel
