Searching awkward names

those are good suggestions

you can also exclude things when you search at google ... use the 'minus' sign to exclude pages with particular terms

for example you can put this in your search terms

-"british heritage"

this works for some common terms and names, like if you are looking for someone named Cambridge you can put

-"cambridge university" -"cambridgeshire"

but for Heritage it would be a very long list of exclusions I'm afraid :-)

Hi Mairie,

You can also add a place where they resided to make a more targeted search..so if you are googling try say...King family Monmouthshire...sometimes this limits the number of hits you will get.

If you google something like "surname Heritage" using the inverted commas it should cut out some of the things you do not want.

Thanks all , I'll have a rummage and see how it goes, it is still easier than Smith or Jones .

I know what you mean about awkward names. Mine is Auger. Lots of sites trying to sell me the drilling auger.

I would try entering the first and second names
e.g.
"John Heritage" or "Mary Heritage"
If you don't enter the name within the inverted commas you will get every John and every Heritage going. Always google with inverted commas if you have more that one keyword.
Hope this might help.-jl

Hello
Do any of you have tips on searching awkward surnames like Heritage so that you do not end up trawling through hundreds of historical societies etc to get to a person with the surname Heritage.
Many thanks in advance for any tips
Marie
