If you look at this on Wikipedia Carol it might help you it lists all the newspapers around the world that you can access. Not all are free.

The South London Press is/was the big local paper at this time.

Their archives are not online, but you can go to their hq in Mitcham/Morden to look at them.

Or alternatively visit the newspaper archives at Colindale (before they close).
