HI Shirley,
Yes thats right it was about 80.00 for the full records with photos. Unfortuantely you pay 15.00 even if they find nothing. Which was the case.
take care

£15 is for an initial search to see if the child was in their care. If you want a copy of their record including a copy of the admission photo then you pay again . the photo and records is of course the dearest option because most people would like a photo of their ancestor as a child

Think that where they were sent depended on whether they were placed through a church or other charitable institution or whether they were sent to the Poor Law Orphanage attached to the workhouse,

Maybe the father's marriage certificate to the stepmother will give an address to focus on, so that you know if they were in Basingstoke itself or one of the outlying villages..... Maybe there was a nearby school which might have records of their attendance there and perhaps the name of where they went next.

The Hampshire County Record Office has an online database where you might find an idea of what documents they hold.

Hi Jax, Bridget and Marion.

I don't know if all the stories where true, I do know that his mother died in 1915 when he was 2 and that his father remarried in 1916 I also know that they lived in Basingstoke with the family, perhaps they were placed in Camarthen! They also had 2 sisters and I have been unable to trace them, perhaps the new wife didn't like the children and got rid of them all. The 1921 census will tell more (but what a long wait). Lots of unaswered questions. Thank you all for your help! Bridget I will PM you. thanks again all. Lorraine

I was told a similar story about my grandmother & 2 of her siblings around 1907-10 when their parents died.
It turned out that they were placed in the care of the Waifs & Strays Society which is now the Children´s Society.
Think the term "sent to Barnardo´s" was just generic for childrens homes generally rather than the actual organisation
Got all the info held by the Children´s Society & all they asked for was a donation although had to wait over 6 months which was frustrating, but understandable.
You have to send copies of certs etc to prove your relationship to the person you are enquiring about.
It may be that your relative was placed with one of the charitable organisations other than Barnardos.
Good luck.

Lorriane.
Good luck with your research re Barnardos.
My uncle married a lady who had been seriously abused by her husband, who was in the Army and divorced she divorced him,

She was so badly abused that she spent time in hospital and when she came out she made an attempt to kill herself and her children...the "cure" was to place her in prison and all the children where put into a Dr Barnado's.

I notice that you mention Camarthen and am intrigued as after many many years all the children found each other, some now deceased, and I believe that my aunt came from Camarthen.

The children were placed in Essex apparently the idea was to place the children as far away from home as possible.how cruel!.

Do you know if any of these stories are true ? I know my grandparents told all sorts of stories which I have now found out to be untrue.

I recently found out my OH grandfather was in a home in 1911 along with a brother although his mother was alive but had remarried. I wonder if they were there because the stepfather did not want to bring them up and as their father was a mariner but had died they were placed in a seamans childrens home??

Hi Thanks for your reply, I did pay 15.00 for the search, I will see if I can find the local childrens homes in Basinstoke area after 1915. But my grandfather and his brother ended up working on farms in Camarthen but not quite sure how they got to be there. MY family say that they were seperated during the stay in the home but the two farmers wer talking and realised that they both had lads with the same surname (Deadman) and bought them together and they remained in touch.

I am not sure how old they were when they were in Camarthen and don't know how when or how long they were in homes for. If they had commited a crime would it have been some kind of offenders home.
Thanks again Lorraine

My FIL was placed in a home in the early 1900,s .he always said it was Barnados but they had no record of him.I tried all the other childrens society's but found nothing. Only a possible location on the 1911census finally found him in a Birmingham Local Children's Home. The aftercare/adoption dept of Birmingham Council finally gave my hubby his info, but think this was only because Dad now deceased and Hubby is his next of kin, plus it was over the 75 years privacy ban.

You could try the local Council as a first stop and then google for possible childrens home in the area and who ran them . It may take some time though

Hi, I sent off to Dr Barnados for a search of my grandfather as I was trying to fine details of his younger days where he went etc. Was told by Nan that he and his brother were placed in the home when he was younger for being naughty one version was that he and his brother set light to a barn another was that they stole some buns. He was born in 1913 and his mother died in 1915 Was gutted today when got a letter today to say they had no record and Nan passed away earlier in year so don't no where to go. Has anyone any idea where to go from here. he was originally living in Basingstoke and his brother was placed in the home at the same time.
