hi,iknow that there is already a thread going along the same lines, but my question is to ask anyone if they might know of a home in southport merseyside.
my dad as a child of 8 was put into a home in 1948-50 after his father died suddenly and he became naughty and uncontrolable.he remembers it being run by nurses(a nursing sister smacked him across the face and knocked him off his chair)he remembers her starched white cuffs.he knows it was in southport but does not remember the name of the place, does anyone have any ideas.x

If you know the name of your father's school before that, you may be able to find his entry in their admission book and it might record where he moved to next.
Some school record books are closed for a certain time-span, but there seems to be no hard and fast rule to this, so it might be worth checking.
If your father is able to make the request, you may have more luck.

There were a few such schools in the Southport area ....

Birkdale Farm School Reformatory for Catholic Boys. this became St Thomas More approved school in 1933.

St Georges School, later known as Clarence House in Southport (Liverpool Catholic Services).

St. Vincents School for Boys in Formby (about 3 miles from Southport) ... I think this was also run by Liverpool Catholic Services.

Many of the children sent to these schools were from bereaved familys, parents unable to cope etc. It is well documented that many of these boys suffered abuse of all descriptions in at least the last two schools(?).

I think Panorama or a similar programme ran an expose a few years ago

hi libby.thank you for your interesting post.
dad was not catholic (im not sure if he would have been allowed to attend a catholic school)
hes said to me that hes sure the staff were nurses and not nuns, and yes he experianced a degree of abuse which must have been terrible for a child greaving for his father.x

Hi Suzanne

There is an organisation for people that was in care. Hopefully you can identify where your dad was in care.
