I have a relative, Robert Vanstan, who in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (while living in London) declared his birthplace to be "Newton Yorkshire"
I can find various Newtons on Google but no obvious one. Which town/village did he mean?
A possible clue is that he might have married in Rotheram.

Newton, Doncaster is the nearest to Rotherham?

Could be Newton under Roseberry, or Newton on Ouse.

Thank you Patchem. It is indeed close to Rotheram so is certainly a possibility
