Hi
Does anyone know someone named Elizabeth being called Martha !!!
I have Robert White married to a Martha and they have 5 children from 1822 to 1839. I have them together on the 1841 census.
Robert died 1849 but I have Martha 1851 and 1861. Her brother is resident with her in 1851 so I know her maiden name is Cowap
The problem is that the only marriage I can find is a Robert White to an Elizabeth Cowap in 1815.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I hope this makes sense.................
Christine

Is it possible that Martha was her middle name ?

This has happened with me. For one ancestor there was no middle name on her birth certificate but on census she was sometimes Beatrice or Polly

Can you find a birth registration for any of the children born after 1837?
That should have the mother's name and maiden name.

Possibly not all of them? There's a 10 year gap 1822-1832.

I see in 1841 there's an Ann Cowap, aged 3 living with them.

I missed Mary 'cause it didn't have mother's name but she's on the 41 census.

Hi all
Sorry I havent responded........I lost complete access to my tree for some unknown reason but can now open it.
Yes all these are Robert and Marthas children but none show Marthas maiden name (CheshireBMD is not as up to date as others). I have assumed it is Cowap because her brother is living with her in 1951 and he is called Cowap.
I have found births for both Martha Cowap and Elizabeth Cowap around the right time but the marriage to Robert White def shows Elizabeth.
It may just be one of those things I will never know for sure.........
Thanks

Hello Christine,

Have you seen the family on family search? ( Free to search)

A Ralph Cowap b 1750 marr to a Elizabeth Brock b 1768 marr in Tarporley cheshire 1791
and all the children listed mostly born Budworth cheshire.
All the childrens names seem to have the same names in Martha,s family.
Perhaps it is as they have already said that she had 2 names
Martha Elizabeth or Elizabeth Martha.
would they be her parents?
check it out!!

,,,,,,,,,,,children,,,,,,,,Mary ,( Martha b 1793 ) , Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Ann , William , Ralph,
Sarah , Frances ,Joseph , Jane .

Hi Florence
Thanks for that. I had seen it but my Martha was def born in Ince so I hadnt looked further.
I will have a look and see if I can tie in the Ann living with them in 1841.
Thanks again
Christine
