Hello Rebecca,

You won't find out about your grandad's war medals on Freebmd - that is for searching births, marriage and deaths.

It would be better for you to google War Medals or similar - there are several helpful sites available.

You won't get a certificate, but should be able to find the reference for ordering one.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Click on marriages.
Put in man's SURNAME and first name
Limit possible years but give a margin, eg. start 1908
Click FIND

If you find a suitable place and name, click on the PAGE number to show other people on that page ( there are generally 2 couples)

If you don't know who married who, try looking for later children after 1911 who have the correct mother's maiden name with the right surname

Rebecca, if your great grandad was in the first world war his service record may be available on Ancestry. There are quite a few other military records there. If you give names I expect someone will be able to check if anything is available.

The service records for WW II are not available, if they were in the Army and killed or taken prisoner, records of that can be found.

The following message is displayed on Ancestry:

"Although British military service records for WWII are still held by the MOD, family members can apply to get copies of personnel records by writing to the MOD. You will need the permission of the person themselves if they are still alive, or their surviving next of kin along with their death certificate."

We were able to get copies of my late father's WWII army personnel records without difficulty.

There was a form to fill in and my mum had to sign a simple letter authorising me to have access. They also revealed some very interesting information that we were all unaware of....! We were also able to obtain his War Medal too, as he had refused to collect it at the time.

All together took about six months from the time of my initial enquiry.

As my mum was still alive I didn't have to pay the £30 fee.

Otherwise, as Joan has said there is a fee.

Wait time depends on whre the records are held. Whilst the MOD has overall control, they are actually held in various different archives. Some of these only have a single part time archivist so you have to be patient.....!
