What is the position regarding records of people from the Isle of Man? My great grandmothers family was manx. I am having difficulty finding birth records. Strangely, they do appear on the census lists.

Irene

Ancestry has a good amount of info on the Isle of man.

Would you like to give us a name and some details ,we could see if we can find them for you.

I must admit I have not tried in Ancestry. I will have a look there first, then come back. I did not realise there could be such a difference.

I did try over a year ago to find them in Ancestry too, thought I was doing it wrong and went on to to other things. Tried again today with no more success.
I have the family of John and Maria Cowley on the census returns for 1851, 61, 71, 81, then a gap, 1901 and 1911.
1851 & 61 has them in the Isle of Man, 71 & 81 in West Derby, Liverpool. Then a gap, presumably when John Cowley died, then the last two where Maria is listed as a widow in West Derby and Everton.
She had 13 living children, of whom only 11 were listed on the returns, 8 surviving by 1911. On that return 3 of her daughters were living with her, two married and one single.
What has happened to the births?

Just realised I do have returns for all the censuses. I had to do quite a lot of cross referencing using the children's names to find them though.
