Vivian,

there is one record for a John Tucker b1848 under British Armed Forces Births on findmypast - I don't have any credits to view it but perhaps someone with a subscription could do so.

If you get his marriage cert, it should give you his father's occupation.

PM received from Vivian and my reply:

Sorry about this, but I see it is not in the actual census but in a seperate transcript. It reads:
Name:John Tucker. Age 36. Gender: Male. Birth Year 1845 (have since found it it was 1848). Birthplace:Jersey,Channel Islands.
.Relation to to head of household:Head.Marital condition: Married. Profession:Platelayer. Address: 10 Church Street. Census place: Deptford,Kent,England Disability.
Record Type: Household Family History.
There is no record of his birth in Jersey,so maybe it was a mistake on the census?
Hope this is not too much info.

I have checked the image for the 1881 census, and there is nothing in the disability column. The Disability in the transcription probably refers to the column heading.

John's POB on the image is Jersey, but no mention of Channel Islands. The transcriber probably just assumed that.

Do you have John and Jane's marriage cert. This should have his father's name and occupation on which would help to find him on the census

Vivian, it is better to post additional info on this thread rather than sending PMs - that way everybody can see what has been found.

If he was deaf it would say so. Are you sure it says English disability? I've never seen that before. Was he a foreigner?

Vivian, if you post the details (name, YOB, POB) we could look it up and perhaps be able to help - a second pair of eyes sometimes sees things differently!

Is anything entered on a later/earlier census to reaffirm disability?-jl

Hi
Can anybody help me about the census. In the 1881 census it has "English Disability"' against my great grandfather's name. Does this mean difficulty with the English language, or does it mean he was deaf?
Any help would be appreciated.
