I am having trouble finding a death registration for great great great grandmother Elizabeth Stephenson. I know she died in Newcastle on 18 November 1861 from a newspaper notice.
Would the informant have to report the death in the area she died, come to that was it compulsory to register deaths in 1861?

Thanks safc

I forgot to mention that I sent off for that cert PDQ as it was the only option for that quarter. Unfortunately it was for a little girl Elizabeth Stephenson died at four months on October 31st. It is many a year since I bought a wrong cert, but many thanks for looking!

Hello Tempest and Patricia

Thanks for the suggestions, she died in Union Terrace in Newcastle according to the Newcastle Courant deaths column. She lived all her married life in Coxlodge which was just outside Newcastle then. I have been trying to track down her children to see where they may have lived and as you say registered the death elsewhere, Am I right that there is no longer a checking points facility when ordering certificates. Elizabeth Stephenson was quite a common name in Geordie land!
I shall plough on looking for clues regarding her family's home areas before speculating,or guessing, on more certs!
Many thanks one and all

Sorry not to get straight back folks, starting to cook dinner! John's death was registered in Castle Ward in 1853. At the time he was a farmer and innkeeper in Coxlodg.e Elizabeth ran the pub The Turf Hotel for a few more years at least until 1885 then it was was sold. Lost track of her then and cannot find her in the 1861 census but that was the family in 1851.

Hello again Tempest

I did spot the entries for Castle Ward and that was one of the reasons for my query as it was several months after her death. Could be expensive trying all these options!

As Hubby was younger I wonder if Margaret Henderson knocked a few years off her age on this 1861 census and was actually Elizabeth Stephenson's daughter

unless you have Margaret already married off, there is this possibility

Fulwell is Monk-Wearmouth/ Sunderland so the death could have been registered over in Mackem-land

Thomas Henderson rang a bell. From the Newcastle Courant "....at Whitburn Church on the 20th inst Mr T Henderson, farmer Holder House ,to Margaret eldest daughter of John Stephenson farmer, Coxlodge"!!!!!
Many thanks Tempest for finding GGG grandmother Elizabeth in 1861 living with her daughter. Registration of her death in Sunderland is certainly looking a possibility.
Just going to do a street/house census check for Union Terrace in 1861 to see if any familiar names pop up.

I don't know if the local register office will deal with telephone calls, but when I was searching for a missing death in Wales, I phoned Bridgend office, as I thought it should be in their area, gave which information I knew to be fact and the staff couldn't have been more helpful
....even though I was looking for a DAVIES !!

Hello again dear helpers!
I was double checking the Nov 1861 deaths column in the Newcastle Courant and realised that Elizabeth did not die in Union Terrace, that was a previous entry all a bit crammed in. However at the bottom of the deaths list I spotted another entry reading
"At Fulwell on the 18th inst aged 76, Elizabeth widow of Mr John Stephenson farmer of Coxlodge"
She of course died at her son in laws farm but her death notice was put in the Newcastle bit as well as for Fulwell.
Her registration will be in Sunderland but I have a choice of two! Anyone have a crystal ball? It will have to be a toss of a coin then!
Thanks to you all.

Sunderland registrars phone 0191 520 5509

and their website,

http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1399

you can give more details eg death date and ask them to search, it costs £9 for a cert
