How about searching trees on here and Ancestry of you're a member. If you come across a match with any of the names/year of event, you have certificates for you could always contact the tree owner.

I have been on Genes for over seven years and have never been asked for a copy of a certificate.
Members,in my contact list, seem to be content with copying information without paper backup.

It would be interesting to know how many certs ever find a new home.

Every so many months I go on here and check out the names on my unwanted certs, haven't found anyone yet to give them to tho, seems nobody's looking for the same surnames I'm researching :-\

I agree with PigletsPal. The other sites are a nightmare to look at in the hope you might find something belonging to you.

Freebmd is used by so many people and they would see the postem against the relevant name. I too have put a postem on for all my certificates with basic info as detailed by PP. If they are ones which I do not want I add an email address (not my usual one) for anyone to contact me

Another useful tool for this unwanted information is on FreeBMD whereby you add Postems for ALL your certificates.

ie Birth - DOB and parents names (including mothers maiden name on earlier certificates)

Marriage - DOM - Fathers names & names of witnesses (its really a personal choice on these how much info you put on)

Death - DOD - Address and name of informant.

I keep all my certificates, including the wrong uns as they can be useful for elimination purposes.

And Rootschat also has a facility for getting rid of unwanted certificates. As there are many other ways of doing this surely adding this facility to the site would just clog the system up.

And having looked at all the other sharing/passing on certificate sites, it can be a bit of a nightmare just going through the names in the hope of finding one that might just be useful to you.

Unless the site has a system whereby all certificates are listed in strict alphabetical order and new ones added are done so in this order, you can spend hours in vain trying to find one useful certificate.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but if you have ever looked at these sites you will understand what a nightmare it can be.

Thanks for these links. BMD exchange has a much wider selection but both are well worth a look

hi porkie.
yes i knowthre are sites to reg unwanted certs, but thought it a good idea to do it here,im sure if genes sorted it out it would be a success.(but remember i thought of it first) we are all doing our treeson here and im sure we are all wasting money on unwanted certs(i know i am) it wouldbe good to sort them into surnames, maybe genes could sort this out?
or we could start it here. :-D

There are several sites you can register them with

http://www.certificate-exchange.co.uk/

http://bmd-cert-exch-site.ourwardfamily.com/

are just a couple

but it would be a good idea if Genes had the capability to do this
