Incidentally, if you've got a whole register of marrs sitting in front of you and the witness surname(s) don't obviously relate to either of the couple, check if those names are witnesses on the other marrs - often you'll see one guy is a witness on 90% of the marrs in that and the adjacent months. I think one can discount such professional witnesses from any family connection.

Unfortunately they wont give the father's name - if you wanted to see an example, even though it isn't your area, go to

http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=ShowImg&Img=/cityark/Scans/Ecclesiastical_Rochester_Archdeaconry_Area_Parishes/P167_HIGH_HALSTOW_1653_1957/01_Incumbent_Service_Registers_1653_1957/P167_01_03.html/00000095.jpg

You may be lucky to find it says Widower or Bachelor, and the witnesses may be recognised names.

NB - if the link address breaks the thread, I'll edit later, so please add to the thread to advise if this is the case.

Kath - spot on.

Do a place search for Whitby in the FS library catalog
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
and see

The surviving parish registers for Whitby are held in the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton. The surviving Bishop's Transcripts are held in the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York.

There are, of course, various non-conformist OPRs, but I didn't check them out.

I think they will be kept at Northallerton.

It really depends on what you want to look at as to whether you need an appointment or not. Would probably be best to ring them and ask.

Marriage records before 1837 usually do not name the father of the couple.

Contact details for the record office:-

North Yorkshire County Record Office
Malpas Road
Northallerton
DL7 8TB
England

Tel: 01609 777585
Fax: 01609 777078
Email: [email protected]

If the records you want are not there they should be able to tell you where to look.

If you google "Whitby Parish Registers" there are lots of sites and maybe some of the registers you want will be on line.

Some archives require an appointment but many are part of the local public library and don't.

Good hunting.
