Hi Edward,

A fire which destroyed the Custom House in 1922, Dublin, held the Census Records and most of the Wills.

However the Census for 1901 and 1911 are intact and available to view free of charge on line.

Remnants of Census from earlier years that were saved, are available I believe from the National Archives in Dublin

The Birth, Marriage and Deaths from 1864 - 1958 are on line via the Familysearch.org.uk site.

Ireland only started to keep official records from 1864.

Records for the six counties, i.e. North of Ireland from 1922 are stored in Belfast

Protestant Marriage's are available from 1845.

The LDS have a lot of Irish records on their family Search website, unfortunately a lot of Irish records were destroyed in 1916 and again in 1922 as i have found to my dismay.

Parish records are probably the most informative, if you know which area of Ireland your ancestors came from you can contact the local church. There is also Emerald Ancestors and the excellent Ros Davies site. One thing I have found is that people over there have been enormously helpful and kind.

Happy Hunting.

There is a very useful thread called "INFORMATION ONLY for those Searching for IRISH " by Teresa, that has gone missing, hopefully temporarily.

In the meantime - civil registration for births started in Ireland in 1864, and try exploring the following that give useful information:
