You can search ER by address. These are normally held at a local main library. Phone directories would also be available. If you can't make a search yourself, they might make a charge.

You can find BMD on the gro index on a number of sites, including this one and freebmd. The certificates themselves would have to be ordered from www.gro.gov.uk and cost £9.25.

You may be able to get National Service records if the person is dead and you are next of kin, or if you can get them (or the widow) to fill up the form. Again, there is a fee if the applicant is not the widow or the person themselves -about £30 and it could take some months.

I don't think the 1950's can really be classified as 'early' records.....they are within living memory for a huge percentage of the population
