Hello

I have found a gravestone of one of my family, and on it is has the following

' This stone is a token of respect from comrades of the 17th CDY R.E. at Aldershot'

His name was George W Podd and he died in 1906 age 22

Does anyone know which regiment this is?

Many thanks in advance

I would think the R.E. stands for Royal Engineers, but not sure what the CDY is for. I thought it might have been CPY for 17th Company but haven't a clue about CDY.

I would say it is The Royal Engineers, how sure are you about the CDY bit, could it be CPY which relates to Company.

So it could be 17th Company Royal Engineers.

I was hoping he might turn up on FMP military records, alas nothing shows for him.

If the above George is the correct one then in 1901 he was a Messenger to an Admiralty Civil Engineer.

Is this his death:-

Registration District: Farnham
County: Surrey

Farnham is near to Aldershot.

Porkie_Pie Report 31 Aug 2011 13:11

I cannot find any military connection to this man and if Kath's findings are correct he may have been a civilian Civil Engineer working with the army that would make sense as the inscription Say's, token of respect from comrades of the 17th CDY R.E. at Aldershot

but CDY does not appear in army abbreviations that i can find

Thank you everyone for your help :)

It might be that the CDY is a CPY or even a COY its a little too hard to read.

He is part of the family above, and the birth and death records are all correctly related to the same person if my research is correct :)

I was not sure that he was in any of the armed services as I couldnt find anything either but thank you to Kathleen and Roy, I think it makes sense that perhaps he worked with them in more of a civil role.

Just had another thought, the grave stone does say Lance Corp William G Podd, would he have this even if he was just a civilian working with the army??

Porkie_Pie Report 31 Aug 2011 18:42

If it says Lance Corp or L/cpl then he is not a civilian,
if it says CPY or COY then these are both abbriviations for ( Company )

It does say Lance Corp George W Podd, sorry for not thinking to give you all this information right at the beginning!

The death certificate may be worth buying as this may give extra information as to whether or not his death was work related.

If it was then the Royal Engineers regiment may be able to help.
