Hi Joy thanks for the welcome I'm really loving this and like you I really wish I had started when there was some family still alive that could have maybe helped but with all the help on offer I'm beginning to get the hang of it cheers val

thanks so much what a smashing crowd your turning out to be and yes your right I did just sit reading other peoples post thats where I got my courage to post myself mind you im still reading back posts its amazing how everyone is so ready to help others and I'm glad its not just me thats a bit obsessed with it all I just hope the day comes when I can repay the kindness thanks to you all

Welcome to the boards :-)

Well you got your name sorted, so that's a start!
It's all a bit daunting at first isn't it - i remember when I first joined I didn't have a merry clue and was too scared to post anything myself so I just sat and read all the boards for ages.....actually, I learned one heck of a lot doing that (and still am) and one of the best boards for that is right here on Genealogy Chat.

So - don't be afraid to ask, we were ALL beginners once. There are some amazing people on here who can give ALL sorts of adivce and help, and who often go the extra mile to help.

And when you feel the need to leave genealogy for a moment (difficult I know) to have some light hearted reading or banter, just pop over to General Chat.....

Hi Gwen thanks for the welcome gosh you have been a member a long time, I really appreciate the help I've had from you and Jan and Flick and hey ho my board name has come up as it should now thats great, I'm really excited now I'm finding names and dates now i just need to practise building the tree should be fun

Val, just a bit of terminology so you understand what people are on about! If you put a message onto here - as we are doing now - it is called 'post' or 'posting'. If you message someone by clicking on their name it is referred to as a PM (personal message).
I say this because people use these terms all the time, and I for one was totally befuddled when I started!

This is not a 'mail'......this is a posting on a message board.

If you have sent messages to other members via GR, it may take some time for replies to arrive - if they ever do.

A lot of people have put trees on here.........some of them many years ago............and have since left the site, or changed their e-mail address without notifying GR. In those cases, your message will not have got through.

But, live in hope...........you may get replies eventually............

One other point........

You might like to change your board name........there are a lot of new members currently using the name 'Unknown', and it gets rather confusing.

If you wish to further your research, and need help, why not post a request on one of the 'lookup' boards. (Find Ancestors and/or Find Living Relatives)

Hi Jan I checked my inbox and the only one with a white envelope is the reciept from GR for my payment so I dont know whats happening the others I sent have got purple envelopes anyway thanks for your help, at least one of my mails got through and I got to talk to you cheers Val

Next! If someone replies you will see a little white envelope in the messages box. You will also be notified by email.

OK. Firstly, click 'messages' above. There will be a menu on the left. Click 'sent messages'. You will see every message you have sent. If unopened the envelope remains purple.
Just check and see.

Hi what happend is when I found an ancestor there was a message on the right hand side that said the person was on someones tree so I mailed the person it was a Carole Watts I think asking for information in fact i sent 3 mails and also someone called Alexa for help with similar information but havent recieved any replies and so I went onto the forums to see if I could see my mails but there is nothing this time is the first time one of my mails has arrived sorry if I seem a bit dumb but ive not done anything like this before so i'm not that sure what i'm doing thanks val

Hi Everyone I'm a new member and would like to say hello also can someone help ive been sending email requests to the group but dont see my mails displayed anywhere and havent recieved replies I've even mailed the help section and not heard back which makes me think i've got something wrong any help would be appreciated cheers Val Ellis
