Hi Veronica

Best to start with what you know - work backwards through marriages, births etc.

If you are coming forwards - finding other descendants from a gr grandparent or something - it is not so easy. Censuses will help up until 1911 but between 1911 and now it can be a bit hit and miss unless you have specific information ...

Try posting a name / area / date etc of at least one of your people and see if anyone here can help with a bit more info - or be able to point you in the right direction.

Veronica, it's really hard to advise in a general way. If you are trying to find marriages 1837-about 1950 you are best to look on Freebmd, but I imagine you are aware of this site as you have all these birth records?

I'm guessing that the people you are looking for are (or might be) still alive?

You could try asking for some specific help on the Find Living Relatives boards - but you're right to be careful about names of potentially living people ... it's not easy I'm afraid.

Give us one name and we can guide you to the marriage and death registrations then prehaps you can use that to guide yourself
Dont worry if you have asked before I dont care I,m happy to help again ...its not easy to find these things and people on here do get upset if you keep asking .....BUT its how they found it you often want to know

Hmm- with the surname of Smith, you do have a problem!

Where were they all born please? And were they likely to have stayed in the same area? Do you have the older ones on 1901 and 1911 for identification purposes?

Hopefully someone will be able to make some suggestions.

so your not intreseted in tracing the family back then? , but are trying to find out who your mothers brothers and sisters married?.

Do you not have any Cousins? or their children, ? have you no family surnames to work with other than Smith?

With a name like Smith it could be like looking for a needle in a haystack, ands without buying countless marriage certs. that could prove to be the wrong ones i don`t really know how to advise.....

Do you live in the Willesden area? if so could you access marriage records at a local records office, at least if you could see the parish records you could check on address and fathers name and occupation to see if you had the correct people.

Exact dob started to be given in the GRO d.index in 1969.
If your mum's sibs lived that long, then you search for, say all Elsies with dob=1/9/1910 +/-2y (or whatever - people do get the year wrong, but not usually the birthday). I would be suspicious of, say, an Elsie Jones with the correct dob with a death being rego'ed in Brent in 1975 say, Would make me want to search for a Jones-Smith marr.

Even if you don't have an Ancestry sub, one can do a free search of the d.index specifying dob for deaths rego'ed 1989 +/- 20

If you don't have a sub, you'll only see partial info

Name Estimated Birth Year Date of Registration District County View Image Order Record
Elsie Jessie L Senior year info 1996 city London

You might see more info if you click on the shopping basket (like the RD is Southwark here).
(NB You can easily backout, assuming you don't want to pay Ancestry an extra 13 quid to place the order for you.)
