re Marriages pre 1837

My head is spinning!!! Please can some kind soul confirm or dispute that marriage taking place pre 1837 all had to take place in a church of some kind - whether it be conformist or non-conformist?

Registry offices did not come into being until 1837?

I ask because I searched at the archives for 2 marriages yesterday - dated 1811 and 1818 that took place in North Collingham, Nottingham and couldnt find them on the records for this place. I have found the marriage records on familysearch IGI records.

Many thanks.

oh - and the info says that it is a 'form submitted by a member of the LDS church' - doesnt say a name and address like it used to for people submitting their own 'records'.

Does this mean that it is extracted info as in a transcript done by a member of the church? or submitted my a member of the church from their own research and not verified???

Any help at all would be VERY much appreciated!

Were they extracted from parish records or submitted? I think the only reliable records on IGI are the extracted ones.
Edit: Just read your previous post. Not all submitted records have the name of the submitter. Personally I don't rely on them.

Hi Margee,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes - that is what I thought also - but family search used to give the names of the submitters and although I have followed the links [batch nos and sheet nos etc] I can find out no further info!

I wondered whether, if they are submitted by a member of the church, that they are transcribed?

Since they 'went live' with the new website, the info they used to give about the records seems to have changed!

The sourch of the info on the website says 'Patron ordinance submission sheets' ???

Hi Lainie,

I think submitted records can be submitted by anyone. I had a case where someone submitted totally inaccurate info on one of my branches - they were in the USA. I wrote to them to let them know their info was wrong and, whilst very polite, they didn't seem very bothered. I then found out they were members on here and I could have contacted them that way....doh!

This info re marriages may be helpful.

Information on a Record: 1754 - 1837
In 1754, new legislation was passed which stated that everyone had to marry in a licensed parish church in their own parish.

A pre-printed marriage register was used to record marriages, and this recorded the following:

- Name & Parish of both the Bride and Groom
- Date
- Signatures of Bride & Groom
- Signature of Clergyman performing the ceremony
- Signatures of two witnesses

The records for North Collingham are kept at the London Family History Centre.

Hope this helps.......Cx

Hi Lainie

I'd treat "submitted" records on familysearch with the utmost caution!

The information can be just as easily made up as based on fact!

the best of the familysearch sites to use is the new beta. site .......... the records on this site are all reputed to be extracted from parish records.

www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

One of OH's family lines is reputed to have been Quaker, and in fact I have found records of one of the men being a famed Quaker preacher ................ but everyone seems to have married in the local parish church, whether that be in Lancashire, Westmorland or Yorkshire! They seemed to have moved back and forth between the 3 counties ... reputedly to avoid bigotry and religious problems.

Hi Cynthia and Sylvia,

Thank you for your replies - you have confirmed my suspicions about submitted records - I dont want to go down that road!!!

I will try using just the new family search website in future - but find it a little hard to negotiate!!

However, if these couples did get married then it has to be recorded on the records for Collingham.

Hi Shane,

Can I please take you up on your kind offer to look up in the North Collingham records for me?

Robert Milnes - Mary Brown - c1811
William Liley - Charlotte Vaux - c1818
George Milnes - Charlotte Liley - c1844
[this info has come from family search - submitted]

I am trying to get a connection between the Milnes i.e. is Robert George's father - and the Liley's i.e. is William Charlotte's father. I am not sure that marriage records from these dates will give the info that I want - but any info will help me.

Many thanks for offering to help.

Robert Milnes/Mary Brown marriage is on Ancestry (Nottinghamshire Extracted Parish Records). Sorry, my sub doesn't let me view it. Maybe somebody else could?

The 1818 marriage is also on there but not the 1844 one but you can get the marriage cert for that.

Hi Shane,

I had spotted that the 1844 marriage is listed as Newark, but knowing that Collingham comes under Newark district - I was wrongly thinking that this could still be a parish wedding - must be a civil one then.

As for the other two - well I must need my eyes testing cos I didnt spot either of them on the registers - although I was moving back and forward between north and south for baptisms and marriages - I didnt think I had missed any fiches. lol what a numpty I am!!!!! I will check them again next week.

Thank you so much for your time Shane - you're a star!!!! And although I have totally missed spotting them, I now know that I am not going mad - just a little dotty!!! :-S

lainie

when was George Milnes born?

There is a Public tree on ancestry that shows a George Milne, born ca 1816, South Collingham, marrying a Sarah Lobsey in 1839 in Lincolnshire.
Parents unknown

Not that many trees on ancestry are any more to be trusted that submitted entries on familysearch ;-)

Hi Shane - Yes I had noticed the two families on the 1841 census - and I thought it was probably more than coincidence. However, in the Milnes family you will notice no George [son of Robert?], which made me wonder whether they were his family or not. That is the main reason I was trying to look into this in further detail cos I dont want to go off down the wrong track!! hmm.....

Hi Kucinta - thank you for finding and posting the ancestry records - this confirms what Shane has found for me - I will look on ancestry when go to the archives to see if it leads me to other info.

Hi Sylvia - the baptism you have found confirms the link between Charlotte and her parents - and also the info in the 1841 census. If only I could find a baptism for George??? I have George as born c1817 and when searching the baptism records at the archives I did find a child
[also George] born to a George and Sarah Milne. I havent totally discounted it but seemed to think the Charlotte connection stronger because George had, I believe, two children William born c1845 and George c1848. In the 1851 census there is a Charlotte - widow - with two sons William and George in South Collingham. William is the line I am following - but cannot find a birth/baptism in Collingham for him. I looked at baptism records between 1844-1848 because he states 1845 + 1848 on the census records I have found. Now I have a possible surname for the Sarah I can look into this further.

Please tell me if all of this info doesnt make sense!! - even I have to stop and think about it before I look for something on this family! lol

Thank you all so much!!! :-D
