Hi

Can anyone help me with the registration district for Piccadilly, London please.

I think it also depends on when you're looking as the districts change.

Think it's St. James Westminster

RutlandBelle Report 11 Sep 2011 16:04

yes as BMD says it does depend on which years you are looking for as they have changed over time.

I also think it would be Westminster

Thanks for tips. Looking for a birth of William Hill(s) c1865 in Piccadilly London, according to two census entries.
Not much experience of London research, luckily most ancestors from Home Counties.

Ancestry have a lot of London parish registers on their site. I think they are also offering a free 2 week subscription ...

Do you know William's parents' names?

Maureen Report 11 Sep 2011 16:22

Will try Ancestry. Yes parents are William & Charlotte (nee Judd). Parents born Essex.
Thanks

Think I have found my William Hill.

Entry from Ancestry says
bap 30 Jun 1867 William Henry s/o William & Charlotte Hill
155 Pentonville Road. Tobacconist.
St George The Martyr - Middlesex

Thanks everyone

Was this the same family that ended up in Northfleet by the 1881 census?

The census transcription normally includes the rego district where it's taken.

I found the 1881 CR and the baptism you found - plus another baptism with parents William and Charlotte. I didn't feel too comfortable with father's occupation being so different (explainable but different) and young William's age not being consistent with 1881 and 1871 (if they were in Essex in 1871). Maybe nothing, but didn't feel "right". (call me picky!)

No connection - but OH's family originated from Northfleet so that's sort of familiar territory. And if you do end up researching around Northfleet their parish records are on Cityark. Excellent site.

I can see the problem with that - it assumes Ancestry is going to get it right. E.g.:

1881 England Census about Henry M. Smith
Name: Henry M. Smith
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Martha Smith
Gender: Male
Where born: Winchester, Hampshire, England
Civil parish: St Georges Hanover
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street Address: 131 Piccadilly
Condition as to marriage: Married
Education:

Employment status:

Occupation: Manager Of Gents Chambers
Registration district: Chelsea
Sub-registration district: Mayfair
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Neighbors: View others on page
Piece: 96
Folio: 7
Page Number: 7
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry M. Smith 30
Martha Smith 29
Mary Smith 26
Thomas Field 21
Emma Hunt 18

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 96; Folio: 7; Page: 7; GSU roll: 1341022.

So is Mayfair in Chelsea RD.- it does not sound likely to me.

Clicking on "St. George Hanover Square" in a suitable FreeBMD hit, then the more info "here" link gets:

ST. GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Registration County : London.
Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.10.1933 (succeeded by City of Westminster district)
Sub-districts : Belgrave; Hanover Square; Knightsbridge; Mayfair; Mayfair & Knightsbridge; St. John; St. Margaret; St. Margaret & St. John; Victoria; Westminster St. John; Westminster St. Margaret.
Registers now in Westminster district.

Also a quick ref look up of rg11/96 at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/Default.asp?j=1
using the little box at top left, gets

Piece reference RG 11/96

Well, if the baptism was in St George's Hanover Square they are not on Ancestry Parish Records as they are not held at the LMA.

Thanks everyone, will pass findings on.

Jill, thanks about Cityark, but have been using it since it came online. Very very useful site, but takes a bit of getting used to. As it happens I live in Northfleet and lots of my research is in the area. Luckily or not, most research pre registration now, so lucky to live near record offices.

Just because the rego district is called St George H Sq, it doesn't necessarily follow that that's the church they would go to, even assuming they're C of E.
In this case, I would have though St James Piccadilly was a more likely choice, but there are literally dozens of churches no further than St Georges from some part of Piccadilly.
Even St Paul’s Church Knightsbridge is closer to the Hyde Park corner end than St Georges is to the Circus end.
