Hello all,

My 4x great grandfather was Mathew/Matthew Denchfield born 1814 in Wing, Bucks.

I have found him on the 1841 census , it has him listed with wife Ann, daughter Sarah and another person which I believe is son William - next to William in the 1841 census it says something else but I can't for the life of me read what it says !!

Can anyone else?

RutlandBelle Report 12 Sep 2011 16:57

it says ????Child so maybe a nurse child (fosterchild)

Squeaky020 Report 12 Sep 2011 16:59

ooh well the mother's maiden name is Fields

but I am sure William's birth entry for 1838 is the correct one with him being a Denchfield.

I wonder?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 12 Sep 2011 17:00

I think it might say stepchild??

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 12 Sep 2011 17:01

Step child does it say???

Matthew and Ann didnt marry til 1940 - I wonder if Matthew was the father of William?

But like I say he was registered in 1838 under Denchfield - if I have the right entry

:-/

Jan I think you are right, there is a letter that has a long stroke as in P

Squeaky020 Report 12 Sep 2011 17:06

Yeah I agree,

Matthew must have been there at registration for him to take his name?

Maybe they met when Ann was carrying and he took William on as his own?

Hi Brummie Jan,

Sorry for delay.

I have got to say, I am getting so confused with this Denchfield branch of mine! There are so many of them.

Yes thats what I have is that Matthew and Ann married in 1840, William was born in 1838 , so they married 2 years after .

William was registered as a Denchfield so a little puzzled why he down as Fields in 1841?

strange?

I went looking on familysearch to see if I could find a baptism for William, in case it offered clues, but may have found more of a puzzle.....if this is the same man?

Ooh I am very confused now, what with Porkie's findings,

I do not have the birth cert and would be very unsure which one to get with so many possibilities!

And where does the Bone connection come in?

arghhhhh :-D

Porkie_Pie Report 13 Sep 2011 19:28

I can only find 1 birth for a William Denchfield in Buckinghamshire for 1838

Name: William Denchfield
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1838
Registration district: Buckingham
Inferred County: Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire
Volume: 6
Page: 330

But in light of the Marriage for Matthew Denchfield to Ann Fields in 1840 and them having son William down on 1841 census as William Fields (Stepson) i would think you should be looking for a birth of William Fields

You could buy the cert for William Denchfield as listed above to either prove or disprove if he is yours

But remember that in 1838 registration was not compulsory
