Thank you all for your research. I have now found their marriage in 1854 in Nottingham. I think Gt.grandad sometimes called himself John Lawrence Bow, insteas of Lawrence John,on certificate his fater was John Bow a Farmer, but all it says is Ireland. Mary Burke's fathers name was given as Anthony Burke (deceased). I just don't know where to start looking in Ireland.

I agree - and it can be spelt Donohoe sometimes can't it? I think! Maybe they pronounced it that way?

Well, it's a start. Personally I would be getting that marriage cert.

I have looked for a Bartholomew Burke on later censuses but unfortunately there are several, impossible to pin him down exactly. A pity as most of them obligingly give county of birth, not just Ireland!

I too can't work out the spelling of that other name, but I am less familiar with irish surnames. Sounds a bit mad, but may be worth saying it out loud it with an Irish accent, as this is what the enumerator would have heard .

Too early for me...
Cant for the life of me guess what the surname above Birk is supposed to be...

Just wondering if this is mary 1851? Right area of Nottingham - in fact same street as1861 (Beck St):

EDIT I think 'Barbkoleacur' might be Bartholomew! Might be worth a quick check for him, possibly a brother or at least a relative.

I also see that her mother was mary - 1861 has her birthplace Notts about 1800 interestingly, but might be an error.

They married in Nottingham it seems. Getting the cert might help as hopefully you will have fathers' names to search for:

Marriages Sep 1854 (>99%)
Bow Laurence Nottingham 7b 319
BURKE Mary Nottingham 7b 319

Thank you for replying and the advice given. I am a real newbie at this. My great grandfathers name was Lawrence John Bow and his wife's maiden name was Mary Burke. Not sure of the exact date they came from Ireland but I think around the mid 1950's. They then married and settled in Nottingham.

Hello Audrey and welcome to the boards.

As well as giving us a bit more information, have you tried putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above (in the dark green bar)? This would show you if anyone else on this site has them in their tree and you can contact the tree owner. Cx

I have traced my great grandparents back to 1867 when they came from Ireland to England. However, I can't find where in Ireland (am pretty sure it is Southern). Any ideas where I can start to look?
Thanks
