and they regularly lied about their ages,

especially if one was under age (ie, under 21), and they didn't have (or want to get) parental permission

OR if one was much older than the other

Plus they could lie about their marital status .................... and be married bigamously, OR indicate they were single when in fact they were widowed.

Well, if you are going to invent a father you might as well make it a good 'un! One of mine invented a father Alexander Longfield auctioneer. Yeah right.

You will often find that illegitimate children will name a father I have several fathers called John >>>>>>>> but no record of these men exist.

Illegitimacy was such a taboo subject (yet so prelevant) that very few people would admit to have been born out of wedlock.

I have a wonderful father called Herbert Fowler - a Surgeon. Yeah right. They were from the Ponton Road estate Battersea one of the roughest parts by the river!

I am working on a family now.
Francis Hookey took his stepfather's name and married as;
Francis Hopper,gave his father as Robert Till,who was his second stepfather.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Another;
Annie Chambers gave her father as Thomas Chambers(deceased)
Real father Thomas Parker who was still alive.

Really anything goes.

I always thought that you couldn't lie on a marriage cert but this now raises some questions for me. Thank you for your replies. Not quite sure where to go from here on this one. Will need to go away and have a think.

Thank you all

"Is it possible for a woman getting married in 1890 to lie about who her Father is on her marriage cert?"

In answer to your question, yes it was.

Then as indeed today it is not a legal requirement to give any details about your father when getting married. It appears to have been very common for those born illegitimately to "Invent" a father when getting married to avoid embarrassment or stigma.

And in answer to your question....yes people would lie on certs about their father, especially if they were illigitimate............rather than admit the it, they would name a "father".......have seen many threads with people trying to trace fathers named on marriage certs., but noone can ever find them!!

Is it possible for a woman getting married in 1890 to lie about who her Father is on her marriage cert? On census record 1891 she is listed with her married name as the daughter of another person ( not the same name ). Who would you believe, the census or the marriage cert? ( I don't require a look up)
