Investigating Female Ancestors

Tracing male ancestors is relatively 'easy' as they retain their surname.

Are there any tips for researching female ancestors prior to 1837.

I would like to establish marriages for females on the Nicholls line, born in the 1780's. Would it be a good idea to first establish if they died unmarried.

As an example I would like to know if Mary Nicholls born 1785 in Sudbury, Suffolk married.

Would appreciate any advice.

Both options should be considered. You could try the old style familysearch's IGI as well as the new version.

IGI -http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp

Click on International Genealogy Index. Take care about accepting submitted records, although they are probably OK. Extracted records are PR transcriptions.

New style - http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Click on 'try the updated site' orange button at the top of the page.

Sudbury PR don't seem to be on line, but you could try an internet search for them to double check.

There is also http://www.freereg.org.uk/ although most of Suffok is untranscribed.

You could also try Genuki as a portal.

Also worth checking the 1851, maybe even 1861 censuses. You could try searching on just first name and place of birth (and year of birth) - that might give you a few clues.

I have had a search for your Nicholls family, and have found a lot about her parents siblings and grandparents..She was a product of Lydia..the second wife of Peter, her father..........but the trail runs cold at Mary......

There are plenty of Marriages in Suffolk at about the right time (1805-ish)..but none you can tie down, because entry you are looking for in this sort of chase, is FATHER's Name..........none of the early Suffolk marriages for Mary Nicholls have this vital info....
EDIT..Mary \nicholls baptised 29.08 1785 All saints Sudbury..daughter of Peter and Lydia
