Explain you are interested in Family History, and wondered if there was a connection between your two families. Choose a joint ancestor and explain how you are related, and ask if they know the same. eg grandparents, or a named (great) aunt/uncle of theirs being your XX

Depending on their age, suggest that they talk to a friend or relative before replying, and also if they choose not to reply, you will respect their privacy and not attempt to contact them again. Frustrating, but you can't stalk or harass people!

You could add your email address, and put your own address on the back of the envelope in case of non delivery.

Good luck

Always enclose a self-addressed envelope !

It would really depend upon what the possible connection is and whether it might cause distress.
