If you ive in the area you are researching, this is an excellent idea.

If you live some distance away it is still a good idea, but try googling the place name first. My OH has a lot of relatives in the Burnley area of Lancashire and their Family History Society has everything on line, including the newsletters, which can be read by anyone.

I live in Kent although born in London and ancestors mostly from Essex . i joined the local branch of the Kent Family History Society and the help has been invaluable. We have monthly meetings with a guest speaker on all sorts of subjects and not confined to Kent history, plus there are several members who have been most helpful in the knowledge of where to find info.

We used to go to the Family records at Islington where the LMA is close by , to look up census and the big books with the GRO records and order certs. Now most people have subs and the big books have been transferred to Kew then the those trips are no longer viable . They still do a quarterly trip to Kew at a very reasonable cost for a coach seat so these trips are also helpful for other records.
At our meetings you can go as a guest for a few times to see if you like whats offered and the annual membership too is very reasonable at £11. We also get 4 magazines a year which are good reads
All in all I would say give it a try .

family history societies are really good, I belong to 2 Huddersfield and Lincolnshire, though I can't get to meetings. They cost me £10 a year each and I get 4 magazines a year from each which are fascinating. They have a vast amount of resources. The members and committee are very knowledgeable and very helpful

I wouldn't hesitate in joining.

I do not know where you are researching, or what your local history society is like, but try this link for an example of what they could get up to, and how it all works.

You can usually visit before you join as a 'taster', so that you do not have to pay out any money and you can see what it is like. (Or pay out as a 'guest' one-off)
So if you cannot stand anyone there (highly unlikely) you have lost nothing.
