I agree with what Thelma said about being in the forces, "on his majesty's service " it is not to do with being in prison but serving in the military, in some capacity

If he was in prison thats were he would be, not at home.No such thing as being allowed home for the weekend, and to do a bit of shopping in those days LOL

If you give some names,or post the census you have found him on, you never know there might be a military record for him

:-D

At Her Majesty's pleasureFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term is used to describe detainment in prison or a psychiatric hospital for an indefinite length of time;[3] a judge may rule that a person be "detained at Her Majesty's pleasure"

I would guess in the Army.

Hi. I have an ancester (born 1813) on the 1861 census that says for his occupation "on his majesty's service". On other censuses he is a brush maker (he may have been a gypsie but I have no proof yet). Surely if he was in prison he wouldn't be living with his family. Does anyone have any ideas please.
