Good hunting Zena

It is very interesting. My GGG became registered because of previous bona fide practice and had to submit a certificate of good moral character. There are lots of rules and instructions about their duties. It is really interesting reading.

My GG Grandmother was an early registered midwife (1904), the Wellcome Collection in Euston Road in London has copies of the Midwives Roll, I went there and found my ancestor's details, very exciting... Also, copies at the national archives.

Can't answer your question but there was mention of Robin Gibb's relative being a midwife on last nights Who Do You Think You Are. They found the details about her on a register. Perhaps someone who was paying more attention than me can let you know-jl

1902 Midwives Act: before this act, midwives were untrained. This act made it law that all midwives should be trained and registered. A Central Midwives Board was formed to set the standards that midwives would have to work to.

There has been a register since the 1920's I believe - but I suspect this would be confidential.

You could always ask the RCM:
