Hi Kath,

I have used http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/

Have found it a very extensive site & get what I need copies of by buying credits as required.
Site is great to use after becoming familiar with it - however there are numerous guidelines to aid navigation.I'm lucky coz family deposited vast quantities of business proceedings with them.

Good luck :-)

Have you tried looking on the IGI for a baptism record? If you can find one it could give you his parent's names.

well I would google for them or try contacting a local family history society who may have records

eg : http://www.ndfhs.org.uk/ (Northumberland and Durham)

Can anyone tell me if there is a searchable database online to search employee records for Shipyards in Sunderland. Also is there anywhere similar to search miners records in the same area. I have drawn a blank in researching my great grandfather. I have him on the 1901 and 1911 census, giving his date of birth as c.1865. In 1901 he was working as a shipyard labourer. I have been unable to search my tree back before him as I am unable to find any birth record, so I am now looking into his working life, to see if there are any records there that may give me some more information about him.
